AROMA: From the nugs themselves the smell is a bit faint, with a heavy pine aroma and a sweet lemon undertone. It really isn't all that pungent from the nugs themselves, BUT when you grind some up...watch out. The smell becomes exponentially pungent as the the sweet lemon undertone turns into a heavy and tangy lemon diesel. The heavy pine aroma takes a back seat to the lemon diesel, but is still very apparent. The smell of this strain is unique, as it has an OG aroma coupled with an interesting twist that I can't put my finger on.
TASTE: The flavor of this strain is extremely unique, as it has a twist to it that was not present in the aroma at all. There is a strong lemon pine flavor to the taste, but it is overpowered by a very aromatic floral essence that is ridiculously surprising. The flower like taste comes out of nowhere since the aroma didn't hint at it at all. The thick and creamy smoke puts full flavor on the taste buds, and has good lung expansion. There will definitely be a few chest clearing coughs with every hit.
LOOK: Light green nugs with a tear drop structure, the fat and swollen calyxes shoot out long bright orange pistils almost angrily. The calyxes and pistils definitely give the strain an eye-catching look. It also is due to the manicure job is tight to the nugs, which are absolutely caked in trichomes giving them a frosty look. The trichomes themselves have thick stalks and bulbous caps, along with almost all of them being completely cloudy or amber. It is definitely an attractive strain from far away, up close, and under a microscope.
EFFECTS: Gradual onset high with an extremely relaxing effect, the high is such a "creeper" that I didn't even realize how medicated I was until I got up to get a glass of water, which was a chore in itself. There is a slight cerebral kick that has a mild psychedelic side to it, and puts light pressure at the back of the eyes. The body high puts one into a couch lock state, and releases tension in and pain in the muscles. It is definitely a potent strain with high medicinal qualities, and a relaxing and pleasant stoney side. Good for pain relief, stress relief (possibly anxiety), appetite gain, and sleep aid. Good midday to nighttime strain.
Cali Gold, the 2012 High Times Cannabis Cup Indica winner, is a combination of Jah OG and DS Gold (a descendent of Colombian Gold; a sativa dominant hybrid landrace from Colombia). I had the pleasure of medicating on Cali Gold in San Francisco last year after it won. It truly is an award winning strain with outstanding genetics, and GSPA's Cali Gold is definitely a pristine version of it.
